Introduction
The life blood of any business or organization, whether run for profit or run as a social service, is finance. Without a source of, no business or organizational activity can take off from plans and schemes. Even planning itself requires finance in some cases. Many business and non-government organization(NGOs) have died a premature death not because of technical or social problems but because of bad management of finance or, in some cases, lack of finance. Finding the source of finance to activate the plans and schemes of, the organization and managing the financial resources to the utmost benefit of the organizations are inseparable parts of implementing the objective of the institutions, for no worthwhile plans can be implemented without the active support of financial resources. When good ideas of social service are conceived, the next immediate step is find the source of finance to translate ideas into action. One of the main concerns of the organizers, therefore, is to mobilize financial source to energise their schemes.

Funding Agencies
As is well know, the main source of finance of charitable institutions is from contributions and donations, in addition to Government grants in aid. There are certain NGOs and voluntary agencies in India and abroad, collecting contributions and donation from various sources and pooling large sums of money for financing the activities of other NGOs and voluntary agencies. There Agencies have certain criteria for granting funds to charitable institutions, example, their constitution, the objectives of the institution, track record of the their past performance, etc. Representatives of the Funding Agencies may also visit the place of operation of the institutions in order to obtain first hand information and a spot study of the effectiveness of the operation of the institution. They may also require periodical reports, statement and accounts of the institution they assist financially

National Funding Agencies :
National Funding Agencies may be categorized under the following broad head:

a) National private Non-Institutional Funding : This category includes funding from the organization’s own sources which may include donation from individual philanthropists, contribution from the community, funds generated from membership, sals and interests, etc.

b) National private Institutional Funding : This category includes Funding from socio-culturaland religious bodies, trusts, corporate bodies and business houses. This type of funding also include resources generated from the national level funding by voluntary organizations such as Ashoka Foundations, Gandhi peace Founding, Aga Khan Foundation, etc.

c) National Level Government Funding : The Government of India through various department and ministries has initiated centrally sponsored programmes providing financial assistance to voluntary organizations through grants-in-aid. State Governments and the local bodies have also been funding the charitable institutions. Beside, many government and semi or quasi governmental agencies like National Children’s Fund, Central Social Welfare Board, Family planning Associations of India, etc. are offering financial support to voluntary initiatives.

International Funding Agencies

The international funding or contribution from foreign sources is of the major sources of funds to voluntary and charitable institutions in India. The inflow of such into the country has, over the provisions of Foreign Contribution (Regulation ) Act, 1976 ( FCRA ), and all institutions receiving funds from abroad shall have registration with, or prior permission from, the Home Ministry of Government of India.
(please refer to Chapter ….for more details on the FCRA).

The foreign sources of funding are divided into the following categories:

  1. International private Non-Institutional Funding : The sources of these Funding Agencies include resources mobilized from individual Contributions and donations,
  2. International private Institutional Funding : This category of agencies include international Lions Club, International Red Cross Society, Amnesty International, Centre for American Relief Every where (CARE), etc.
  3. International Institutional / Government Funding : This type of funding at the international level comes from the following two major sources:

i ) Bilateral Institutional Funding : Bilateral funding are mainly     from departments and ministries of the developed countries to the government sponsored peogrammes  in India. Most of these funds are coming to the country on a government to government level.
ii)  Multilateral Institutional Funding : This category include funds various agencies of United Nations like WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, FAO, UNEPA, UNDP, UNEP, and other international agencies like World Bank, International Monetary funds, Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, Organization of petroleum Exporting Countries, etc.
It may be stated that the major source of international funding to charitable institutions in India is from the international non-governmental agencies, is which is subject to the provisions of FCRA.

Effects of funds from funding Agencies

The financial assistance, both internal and external, has salutary effect on the scene of voluntary movement in the country. The society has enormously benefited from a large number of charitable hospital, school and college, training and rehabilitation   centers, employment generation schemes, orphanages, self-head and aware generation movements, social service centres, ets. Operating in the country. But for the funds made available by the funding agencies, these initiatives would not have been so successful as they are today. In spite of these commendable achievements, there is still much more remaining to be done. There is still tremendous scope for bringing hope and succour to millions of our countrymen. With increased availability of funds, much more is expected from the cheritable and voluntary organizations in the year to come.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Funding Agencies in India
